Why we built this
Ciphers Digital Marketing is a Gilbert, Arizona agency that runs SEO, Google Ads, and social campaigns for home service and landscaping companies. Our clients fly drones over finished projects all the time, and the same problem kept coming up: the video is great, but the social calendar needs photos too, and pausing a video to screenshot it produces soft, compressed, badly cropped images.
So we built the tool we kept wishing existed. It applies the same math a photo editor uses to judge focus (a Laplacian sharpness filter plus exposure scoring) to every part of your video, and hands back the frames a person would have picked, at the full resolution your camera actually captured. We use it for our own clients weekly. Now it is free for everyone, and while drone footage is what we built it for, it works on any video your browser can play.
One honest limitation: browsers can only decode formats they can play, so standard MP4 and MOV files work great, but professional codecs like ProRes need a quick export to MP4 first. And while the scoring is good at finding sharp, well exposed frames, it does not know which shot has your best angle of the property, which is exactly why the manual frame grabber is built in.
Tips for turning drone footage into scroll-stopping stills
A few things we have learned pulling stills from hundreds of client flights: slow, steady passes produce far more usable frames than fast sweeps, so fly your money shots twice at half speed. Golden hour footage scores dramatically better on exposure than midday glare. For before-and-after posts, hover at the same altitude and heading on both flights so the frames line up. And when you post, lead with the 4:5 crop in feed, then reuse the 9:16 crop of the same frame as the Story that links to it.
